Case Studies

Reporting Consolidated Risk in Real Time

The partners needed live, global, intraday risk updates. The risk manager was charged with making it happen.

The risk manager instructed desks to publish their risk metrics to U by adding a single U.PUBLISH call to existing risk spreadsheets. Doing so took each desk only a few seconds. The risk manager then created a new spreadsheet that receives all of the desk-level data in real time, consolidates it, and automatically publishes a global report that the partners can view on their desktops and mobile phones. The project was completed within a day.

Developing a Custom Web App Fast

A development manager wanted a customized, interactive checklist of action items for a critical project. Her dispersed team needed to be able to access the checklist from anywhere.

The manager created a list of action items in Excel and published them to UWeb as an interactive checklist. She included a progress chart, a comments section, and a page with project details. Her team viewed and interacted with the report from their desktops and mobile phones, and all changes were reflected in the manager’s spreadsheet in real time. The interactive Web app was built in 15 minutes.

Distributing Centralized Data

Operations maintains a database containing reconciled positions, settlement prices and other critical information. They struggled to distribute the data in an accessible, secure and timely way.

Operations built a simple adaptor that queries the database and publishes reports for each desk to U. They permissioned the reports so that each trader could see only his own. Most traders view their reports in Excel, using the powerful U Add-In utility methods to quickly build highly functional and efficient interfaces. Other traders view their reports in UWeb, and some access them programmatically using one of the available U APIs.

Migrating Critical Functionality Out of Excel

A trading desk critically relied on a large Excel spreadsheet for live portfolio Greeks. The sheet was taking increasingly long to recalculate and often froze, leaving the desk uncertain of its position.

The analyst who maintains the sheet split it into three simpler sheets: one for setting inputs, one for computing Greeks, and one for displaying results. She used U to share data between the new sheets in real time. She immediately noticed a big performance gain, but she wanted even further improvement. She worked with a dev to implement the Greek calculations in a Java server, which seamlessly replaced her calculation sheet.
